What is the Kabir for Kids doha corpus?

It is a set of Kabir dohas, the short two-line couplets of the 15th-century poet-saint Kabir, written out clearly so that people and programmes can use them. For each doha you get the Hindi as we print it, the same words in Roman script, a simpler Hindi version for children, what it means in English and in Hindi, and a short answer to “what does this doha mean?”. Every record links back to its page here, where the doha has a video, a story and a school tip.

Who is it for?

It is for anyone who wants to share Kabir with a child, or to quote his dohas correctly.

What is in it, and what is not?

Version 1.0.0 holds the 22 dohas that have their own page on this website and passed our first-pass review on 30 September 2026: the text, the Roman-script version, the simplified Hindi, the meanings, the short answer, a theme, a Little Kabir Songs level (1 to 4) and links. Each record also has a stable id and page address that we will keep unchanged.

It does not include the Little Kabir Songs lyrics or audio, our stories and story text, pictures, characters, videos, or the Kabir for Kids name and logo. Those stay with us, all rights reserved. The rest of the doha library will be added as each doha is checked.

How do I use the files?

Download the file you need, or read it straight from its address. Both files are served openly, so a web page or app can fetch them directly. The JSON has the licence and field notes at the top, then a dohas list; the CSV has one doha per row, with lines joined by “ / ” and a header row.

The first record, trimmed to a few fields:

{
  "id": "1",
  "slug": "kaal-kare-so-aaj-kar",
  "url": "https://kabirforkids.com/dohas/kaal-kare-so-aaj-kar.html",
  "title": "Kaal Kare So Aaj Kar",
  "original": [
    "काल करे सो आज कर, आज करे सो अब।",
    "पल में प्रलय होएगी, बहुरि करेगा कब।"
  ],
  "meaning": {
    "en": "If you want to do something tomorrow, why not today? And if today, why not right now? Who knows what might happen next! Don't wait — just start."
  }
}

What is the licence, and do I need to credit it?

The doha text, transliteration, meanings and answers in these files are free for anyone to use, for anything, and you do not need to ask us first. We have released them under Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal, which means we give up our rights to them as far as the law allows. Copy them, change them, teach with them, put them in a book or an app, free or paid.

Credit is welcome but not required. If you would like to mention where the words came from, this line is handy:

Kabir for Kids, kabirforkids.com

A link to this page is lovely too. This covers the dataset files only; the rest of the website stays all rights reserved.

Why does it say “attributed to Kabir”?

Kabir’s dohas were sung and passed on by word of mouth for centuries before they were written down, so the wording differs a little between collections. Every record is marked as traditionally credited to Kabir, with the same short note. We do not write new couplets and credit them to Kabir. The Roman-script spelling and the simplified Hindi are our own and are not traditional variants, so please quote the Devanagari original when you cite the doha itself.

How do I report a mistake?

If you spot a wrong word, a spelling slip or a meaning that does not sit right, please tell us. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 93105 33008 or visit the contact page, and name the doha id. We correct the data and raise the version number.
